What is optimum wellness and what does it take to get there?
As a health professional with many years of testing, talking and researching, it is very clear that very few of us operate anywhere near what I refer to as “optimum wellness”.
Optimum wellness is not merely an absence of symptoms associated with being “unwell” but more importantly, having a body and mind that can do all the things we expect it to do – and much more. Where we can perform at ease all of the physical, mental and emotional tasks required to have an exciting, successful and fulfilling life.
To perform at optimum wellness, our body must have its basic needs met regards nutrients, and it is a deficiency of basic nutrients that is often one of the root causes of why a person has become unwell.
If we are to look at a health continuum where at one end is “optimum health” and the other is “premature death” it is a very sad fact that the majority of us a probably nearer the “dead end” than the other.
It may be that today we feel OK and we get on with doing what is needed for the day, but tomorrow we may experience something very different – getting a cold or experiencing some pain associated with an injury or some part of our body that just doesn’t work properly.
What has happened is that we have taken a slide along the continuum due to some additional stressor that has appeared, we have been pushed back along the health continuum slightly closer to the “dead end” and as a result we now begin to experience symptoms that are signals all is not well and our health isn’t as great as we thought – from one day to the next we may be pushed into and out of some type of symptom picture and it seems it takes very little to shift us one way or the other.
Of course we will have times when our body just doesn’t feel great and the normal ups and down of life will get in the way, but if we are able to properly nourish our body and strengthen our organs and systems to the level where symptoms are seldom experienced then we have moved along the continuum in a positive way, the day to day highs and lows are the simple ebb and flow that they should be and we are not forced to stop what we want to or indeed need to do, due to feeling unwell.
The reality of symptoms occurring to signal us that all is not well then become a rare occurrence and we are no longer limited just because we overdid it a little. We now have a healthy buffer that allows us to get out and truly experience a wonderful life.
What do we need to achieve optimum wellness?
The research continues in the hunt for the holy grail of health, but really we all know there is no silver bullet as such, and I am sure that all of you reading this already know that the first step to optimum wellness and keeping well is eating good food. The old “just eat a balanced diet” and you will get all you need is valid – but only to a point.
We need to be giving our body a variety of good food, something that has become more difficult to find over time, in part due to our growing techniques and the high level of processing that much of food our goes through.
When I talk of balance I want you to consider first, the balanced minerals that our body needs as a primary component for all body functions
And what is that elusive balanced diet anyway?
Food in all of nature’s glory is what a balanced diet is, the wider the variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts and seeds the better. The bigger the variety of colours and tastes providing everything from sour and sweet to bitter and bland, then once again, the better off we will be, the variety of tastes to stimulate different parts of our system are all completely necessary.
From this variety there is the need for us to supply an adequate range of minerals, importantly minerals in the correct ratios as well as quantities. This is one area where once again most of us fall short.
Minerals are so fundamentally important that without certain minerals and trace minerals there are numerous functions in the body that simply cannot work. I have already mentioned that in my experience the vast majority of health concerns that many people suffer with stem from a deficiency of one or other minerals.
Let’s be clear, deficiencies come about due to poor dietary choices along with problems such as food production on land where soil quality is diminished and the presence of toxins or toxic residues in and around us and of course in the food chain.
On the other hand, many people take single-nutrient supplements for specific health concerns, but they may actually be doing more harm than good by creating imbalances. It’s important to understand the complex, overlapping relationships between nutrients and why consuming a balance of nutrients may be best.
