When using essential oils topically we dilute them with a carrier oil. Which can be any oil that you would generally use on your skin / in your body.
My favourites are almond oil, fractionated coconut oil – don’t use it often on my face, coconut oil for my body occasionally.
There is a comedogenic scale which rates oils on there likeliness to clog pores and cause breakouts. So it is something to think about particularly when you are creating face oil blends.
Keep in mind that some of the oils may also stain if dropped on clothes or not rubbed into the skin properly. Fractionated coconut I know washes out easily. This scale doesn’t take into account these sorts of things.
Comedogenic Scale and Ratings of some common oils used in skincare
0 – Will not clog pores. Argan oil, camellia, hemp seed, raspberry seed, Shea butter, sunflower oil.
1 – Low. rose hip, castor, calendula.
2 – Moderately low. Almond, evening primrose, grape seed, jojoba, olive, peanut, sesame, Tamanu.
3- Moderately likely to clog pores. Avocado Oil, Fractionated Coconut oil.
4 – Fairly high. Cocoa butter, coconut oil, linseed/flax oil, palm
5 – High. Wheat germ oil
